単結晶シリコンウェーハはすべての集積回路デバイスおよびその他の多くの半導体デバイスに用いられている。多くのデバイス製造ラインで共通の製造設備を使用するためにはウェーハの寸法の標準化が必要である。
さらに，技術の進歩に伴い高密度の集積回路の各要素の微細化がますます進んだ結果，ウェーハのその他の品質特性を標準化することが有益になった。
この仕様はシリコンウェーハの基本寸法およびいくつかの基本特性について規定する。ここでは鏡面研磨ウェーハのみならずエピ用基板ウェーハおよびその他のシリコンウェーハを取り扱う。
これらの仕様は，半導体デバイスおよび集積回路デバイス製造に使用される高純度（電子回路グレード）単結晶鏡面研磨シリコンウェーハの発注情報および特定の要求事項をカバーする。そのようなウェーハは通常，スライス前に直径が均一となるように研削された円筒状の単結晶インゴットからスライスされる。また，これら仕様はエピ，アニール，SOIウェーハを含むその他のウェーハ種類の基板（あるいはスタートウェーハ）として使用することが意図された電子回路グレードのシリコンウェーハの発注情報および特定の要求事項もカバーする。
鏡面研磨ウェーハの寸法基準は以下の分類で規定されている。
ウェーハ厚さ，TTV，バウ，ワープの規定値は裏面膜付け処理，外因性ゲッタリング処理，またはその他の熱処理前ウェーハに適用される。
ウェーハ購入仕様にはさらなる品質特性がその数値をきめる検査方法とともに必要である。本標準ではこれらの諸特性と関連試験方法のリストを示す。このリストはあらゆる鏡面研磨ウェーハ，または基板の購入仕様を作成するための体系的基盤を提供するものであり，購買実務に利用されることを期待している。
ここに定める仕様標準は少なくとも1回以上鏡面研磨されたプライムウェーハに適用される。研削，ラップ，および鏡面研磨されないウェーハは本標準の対象外である。しかし，これらの非鏡面研磨ウェーハを購入する際のガイドになるかもしれない。
本スタンダードは，32，22，16 nm技術世代用300および450 mm径プライムシリコンウェーハの仕様のガイドも提供する。これらのガイドは，関連情報1に含まれる。
本標準は以下のシリコン関連材料またはウェーハについてはカバーしていない。

しかし，本標準はテストウェーハ，プレミアムウェーハ，リクレームウェーハおよびエピ，アニール，SOIウェーハ用の鏡面研磨基版およびウェーハの発注に役立つ情報を提供する。
参考までに，米国で通常使われている単位が2インチおよび3インチウェーハには用いられ，SI（メートル）単位が100 mm以上のウェーハには使われている。
本標準の分類1.10.1，1.10.2，1.11，1.12，1.13.1および 1.13.2に規定されたウェーハ寸法はJEITA EM-3602の規定と同じであり，分類1.15で規定されたウェーハ寸法は基本的にJEITA EM-3602と同等である。
